The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has urged the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Musa Bello to set up a drug control committee.

The agency advised that the team be replicated at all Area Councils and communities in Abuja.

This should be in addition to “adopting drug test as a policy for students, prospective couples, workers and political office seekers as being done in Kano State”.

NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa spoke at national headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.

Marwa thanked Bello for his support, stressing that the agency remains steadfast in drug control efforts across Nigeria to save the youths and families.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari has taken the lead to actualise the mandate of eliminating the supply and consumption of hard drugs.

“We need more support from all stakeholders and every citizen”, the NDLEA boss added while urging the minister to provide more logistics support.

Marwa said with a 10 percent drug use prevalence in the nation’s capital, the anti-narcotics unit would maintain its offensive against cartels.

The chairman announced that between January and March 2022, 142 suspects were arrested in the FCT.

He reported the conviction of 53 offenders, counseling and rehabilitation of 66 users, and seizure of 760 kilograms of illicit substances.

In his remark, Bello granted Marwa’s requests and assured of a formidable partnership that would curtail the menace of drug abuse and trafficking.
